FAKE Design

Ai Weiwei is one of China's most prominent modern artist. Working with Swiss Architectural firm, he has consulted on the design of the signature building of the 2008 Games, Beijing's National Olympic Stadium. He is also the owner of FAKE Design in Beijing. I like that name, very catchy isn't it?

Coming from a family of artists, his late father, Ai Qing was china's most revered modern poet, a protege of Mao who was persecuted in the anti-rightist campaign of the late 50's and was declared an enemy of the people during the cultural revolution.

As a child, Ai Weiwei saw his father banned from publishing and forced instead to clean latrines in the icy remotes of Xingjiang province. He developed a deep skepticism for authority that is visible through his artwork.

But after living in the US emerging as a successful artist, Ai Weiwie became an attractive choice to a Chinese regime that is reaching out to rectify some of the mistakes of its past. In what may be the ultimate proof that his name has been restored to glory, Ai Weiwie recently designed a monument in Zhejiang province that celebrates the work of a former resident - - his father Ai Qing.
